What To Do When You Move?
Whether you’re moving locally, to another state, or out of the country…PLEASE contact us ahead of time.
There are very important, time-sensitive actions you’ll need to take with regard to your Medicare insurance plans.
Additionally, the type of plan you have and where you move will determine what you should or shouldn’t do.
Find the scenario below that matches your type of Medicare insurance plan, and then follow the instructions. We will help you with this, but you need to contact our agency (513-451-8131) or your agent directly for assistance.
If you have Original Medicare + a Medicare Supplement (Medigap plan) + a Part D drug plan…
If you move within the same state…
#1 - Contact our agency with your new address.
#2 - Update your address with the Social Security Administration, your Medigap plan, and your Part D drug plan.
You DO NOT have to change any of your Medicare plans. Just get the address updated.
If you move out of state…
#1 - Contact our agency with your new address.
#2 - Update your address with your Medigap plan. You DO NOT have to change the plan. Though, depending on the insurance carrier, your plan’s premium may change based on the new residence state.
#3 - Work with your agent to get a new Part D drug plan within 2 months after your move month. DO NOT call your existing Part D plan about your address change, as that will prompt them to cancel your coverage at the end of the current month. Instead, get a new Part D plan for your new residence state. Your agent will do this enrollment with you, which will automatically cancel the existing Part D plan right as the new plan starts.
#4 - Update your address with Social Security, which also automatically updates it with Medicare.
NOTE: If you update your address with Social Security too soon, that is just like calling your insurance carrier. They will be informed of your new address and cancel your plan earlier than you might have liked. Instead, work with us to get the new plan within 2 months after the move. And then you can update your address with Social Security.
If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan (PPO/HMO)…
If you move within the same state…
#1 - Contact our agency with your new address.
#2 - Depending on your new residence county, you might not have to change your plan. It’s possible your existing plan also incorporates your new county.
But if you move outside of your existing plan’s service area, you will need to change your plan within 2 months after your move month. In that scenario, work with your agent to get a new Medicare Advantage plan within that time period.
#3 - Update your address with Social Security, which also automatically updates it with Medicare.
DO NOT call your existing insurance plan about the address change, unless we determine that your new residence county is still in the plan’s service area.
Otherwise, if we help you submit a new plan enrollment, that will take care of the address change with the insurance plan.
If you move out of state…
#1 - Contact our agency with your new address.
#2 - Work with your agent to get a new Medicare Advantage plan with 2 months after your move month. DO NOT call your existing Medicare Advantage plan about your address change, as that will prompt them to cancel your coverage at the end of the current month. Instead, get a new Medicare Advantage plan for your new residence state. Your agent will do this enrollment with you, which will automatically cancel the existing plan right as the new plan starts.
#3 - Then update your address with the Social Security Administration, which also automatically updates it with Medicare.
