How To: Enroll in Medicare After Age 65

When you’re first eligible for Medicare, there is a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period (IEP).  Your IEP spans the three months prior to your birthday month, your birthday month, and the three months after your birthday month.  But what if you don’t plan to enroll in Medicare at age 65? Yes, you can do this…and without penalty! You can read more HERE about the reasons why delaying Medicare can make sense.

But let’s discuss how to enroll in Medicare when doing so AFTER your IEP ends. In this case, you would use Special Enrollment Period (SEP) rules to enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B.
