Medicare & Chiropractic Services

Chiropractic care is more than just a treatment for athletes, and is safer than the typical “cracking” sound it makes. Chiropractic services are potentially helpful for people of all ages with a variety of health concerns.

Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) are specialized in treating neuromuscular disorders and disorders of the musculoskeletal system. They are thoroughly trained in manual adjustment techniques to readjust the spine and eliminate misalignments that may lead to health problems. In addition to helping with localized pain in places like the neck and back, patients report these appointments improving things like chronic headaches and dysfunction from previous injuries.

If deemed medically necessary, Medicare Part B will cover manual manipulation of the spine. You will pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount, after paying the Part B deductible. In a Medicare Advantage plan, your cost could be different (i.e. a copay).

Medicare won’t cover every service or test that your chiropractor might order. These include, but aren’t limited to...x-rays, massage therapy, and routine maintenance chiropractic visits. When your healthcare provider recommends services such as these, be sure to get a good understanding of why they are recommending the service and what the chiropractor charges for the service. You may be responsible for paying some or all of the costs associated with each recommended service, depending on things like:

  • Other insurance you may have

  • Whether your doctor accepts Medicare assignment

  • The type of facility

  • Where you get your test, item, or service

Chiropractic care can be beneficial to your overall health care. Be sure to ask questions before committing to any service.
