If you need to visit an Urgent Care or Emergency Room, Medicare provides coverage.
For emergencies that don’t require immediate medical attention to prevent a disability or death, Urgent Care might be needed. Medicare Part B will help cover treatment of a sudden illness or injury in this case. The Part B deductible applies first, and then you typically owe 20% thereafter. Of course, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance plan or Medicare Advantage plan could reduce your out-of-pocket exposure.
When you’re faced with an injury, sudden illness, or an illness that quickly worsens…a trip to the emergency room might be required. In this situation, you’ll pay a copayment for each visit to the emergency department and each hospital stay. Usually, the emergency room copay is waived if you are admitted to the hospital as an inpatient.
Keep in mind, this is standard for domestic emergency services. It’s unlikely Medicare will cover an emergency while in a foreign country. You’ll need to check with your Medigap plan or Medicare Advantage plan to see if foreign emergencies are covered.
No matter the severity or the situation, it’s always important to talk to your doctor or health care provider before any tests are taken or any service is completed.
